Michelle W. Burns


Michelle W. Burns is a graduate of Washburn University and Washbun School of Law. She joined Property Law Firm, LLC as an associate in 2003. Michelle was made a member of Property Law Firm in 2009.

Michelle’s practice primarily focuses on real estate litigation and transactions, eminent domain law, and business litigation. Michelle has extensive experience in counseling clients land use and zoning issues, business and contract disputes, landlord/tenant law, insurance coverage matters, home/condo association formation and disputes, commercial and residential property tax appeals, as well as domestic relations cases.

Michelle attended Washburn University and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice in 2000. She also attended Washburn School of Law where she served as Research Editor of the Washburn Law Journal. She graduated law school in 2003. Her Juris Doctorate was awarded with Dean’s Honors. During law school, Michelle worked as a research assistant for Professor Ali Khan. Michelle researched international law issues and edited several chapters of Professor Khan’s book, A Theory of University Democracy: Beyond the End of History. Michelle also worked in the family law section of the Washburn Law Clinic during her third year of law school representing clients in divorce, paternity, and adoption cases. Also, during law school, she took many property classes including real estate transactions, oil and gas, and real property.

Michelle is a member of the Johnson County, Kansas City, Kansas, and Missouri Metropolitan Bar Associations.

Doug J. Patterson


Douglas J. PattersonDoug Patterson graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in with a Bachelors in Business Administration. He graduated from UMKC Law School in 1973 and was awarded the Order of Bench and Robe. His Juris Doctorate was awarded with distinction.

Following law school, Mr. Patterson became in-house counsel to the J. C. Nichols Company. There he was employed until 1985 and served as attorney to the commercial properties department of the Company and handled land use planning, homes association creation and representation, zoning and various areas of public finance. From 1985 to 1994, Mr. Patterson was a partner in the firm of Schleicher, Latz, Lloyd and Patterson. The firm represented J.C. Nichols and others in structuring transactions. Mr. Patterson continued to represent developers as well as governmental agencies in zoning, land use and public financing areas. In 1994, Doug Patterson formed his own firm, Property Law Firm, LLC. This firm practices primarily in the transactional law area, economic development incentive law, condemnation law and the structuring complex transactions. The firm draws on the expertise of its affiliates throughout the region so as to assure clients the best representation, not only within the firm, but within the entire area.

To understand how to deal with the public sector of the practice, Mr. Patterson served as an elected member of the Leawood City Council and also in the Kansas House of Representatives, where he was the House Majority Whip and Vice Chair of the Kansas House Judiciary Committee.

Doug is a member of the Johnson County Bar, Kansas Bar, Missouri Bar, and Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Associations and serves on the Legislative Committee of the KBA.

Kellie K. Warren


Kellie WarrenKellie K. Warren is a graduate of The University of Kansas School of Law. She is a problem-solver with over 15 years litigation experience, and joined Property Law Firm, LLC after working at one of Kansas City’s largest law firms.  She enjoys working closely with clients, and says that clients can expect to receive big-firm expertise at a small-firm price.  Kellie has experience in all stages of litigation, from factual investigation, motion practice, mediation, and has led jury trials and bench trials.

Kellie’s practice primarily focuses on real estate litigation and transactions, eminent domain/condemnation law, and commercial litigation. Kellie is known for her detailed and thorough case preparation and attention to detail.  She has represented individuals in local matters, and Fortune 100 companies in national and multi-district litigation, as well as out-of-state businesses involved in litigation in Kansas and Missouri.

Kellie advises clients who are plaintiffs, as well as defendants, and is adept at focusing on the needs of each, with knowledge that strategies differ.  Sometimes the same client may be a plaintiff in one matter, and a defendant in another.  In both instances, she treats each case with skill and agility that a small-firm can bring.  At her former firm she focused her practice on torts, product liability defense, and business litigation.

Kellie graduated from Cornell University where she earn her Bachelor’s of Arts in Government and History.  At the University of Kansas School of Law she was a published author on the staff of The Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy, and worked at the Douglas County Legal Aid Clinic as an attorney.

Kellie is a member of the Johnson County Bar Association and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.

Lisa McLellan attended high school at Calhoun High School in Port Lavaca, Texas and graduated in 1986. She attended Victoria College in Victoria, Texas and graduated with highest honors from Texas Vocational School in Victoria, Texas in 1987. Mrs. McLellan worked at various firms throughout the Kansas City Metropolitan area including Berman & Singer, P.A. and Blackwell, Sanders, Matheny, Weary & Lombardi as well as Walker, Keeling & Carroll in Victoria, Texas. Mrs. McLellan was also Escrow Officer and Office Manager at Bedgood Abstract Title Company in Port Lavaca, Texas. Mrs. McLellan is a member of the National Association of Legal Assistants. Mrs. McLellan brings with her over twenty years experience in the legal field with emphasis in litigation, transactional and real estate law.
